Monthly Metal Review

Overview

A U.S. Federal Reserve interest-rate rise is ex-pected in December. The Fed kept interest rates low in November, but chair Janet Yellen hinted at a Decem-ber increase. The Fed could hike the benchmark federal funds rate from 0.25 percent at its 14-December meet-ing. Yellen testified after the government released eco-nomic data pointing to a stronger economy: an im-proving housing market, rising consumer prices and a more-robust labor market. Still, the rising influence of President-elect Donald Trump makes predictions un-certain. Reactions to the election of Donald J. Trump as the next U.S. President continued to ripple through the markets. Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Trump to co-operate with China in Beijing’s first effort to ease tensions from Trump’s anti-free-trade rhetoric during the nationalistic campaign. Trump said the U.S. will quit the tariff-slashing Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal on his first day in the White House, 20-January. The TPP deal was signed by 12 countries which cover 40 percent of the world's economy. China’s central bank set the value of its currency at its lowest level against the U.S. dollar in more than eight years. The dollar has surged against other curren-cies since Donald Trump won the Nov. 8 presidential election. The Bank of England projected a rise in UK un-employment due to an increase in inflation pressure caused by sterling's fall. The pound has lost almost a fifth of its value since the June 23 vote to leave the European Union. Official figures show the UK unemployment rate at an 11-year low, despite signs of slowing em-ployment growth, its lowest rate since 2005. It said 1.6 million people were out of work, down 37,000. U.S. employers added a healthy 161,000 new jobs in October, and the unemployment rate fell from 5 to 4.9 percent. Average hourly pay rose 2.8 percent on-year, the best seen since 2008. German government economic advisors pre-dicted the country's economy will grow by 1.9 percent this year and 1.3 percent in 2017, a slightly slower 2017 rate than previously forecast. The independent advisory council said growth momentum will be es-sentially unchanged. Russia is to slash government spending across the board in the next three years as it tries to bring down a budget deficit swollen by lower oil prices and recession. Deep cuts loom for health, education and defense, slated for a 27 percent spending reduction next year, according to a draft budget submitted to parliament.
